The day has finally arrived. You have an opportunity to show your best in order to obtain the job of your dreams but did you know that the ideas you might express during an interview might be the opposite of what your body is communicating at that moment? Do you know what your corporate language says about you? Here we explain it for you.

When you arrive to a job interview, the recruiter will be looking at your education and professional experience but also at your corporate language. It is important that in these moments you show yourself as confident and that you hide away the nervousness or anxiety you might be feeling so that you don´t transmit this to the person who is interviewing you.

At the OIE we want your interviews to be a success for your professional career and to help you in that process, we give you some key advice so that you can arrive confident on that day.

  1. First impression. On the first contact you have with the interviewer, make sure you give her/him a firm handshake, look at the person in the eyes and of course, smile. Something as simple as a handshake can open many doors.  
  2. Nervous Tics. Know what are your tics (do you bite your nails, do you play with your hair or touch your ear…) and have them under control. During the interview these kind of actions or “tics” can distract the interviewer and make him/her focus on your tics instead of your explanations.
  3. Gesticulation. It is normal to use our hands when we speak. When you are at your interview you do not have to hide your hands in your pockets or under the table but also at the same time try to avoid an excessive use of these as well as brisk movements because these can distract the recruiter.
  4. Corporate Posture. The posture you take has to be comfortable so that you don´t have to be moving constantly. However, avoid placing yourself too back in the chair because that might make the interviewer think you have no interest in the job. The same thing with sitting too much at the front because this can show off as nervousness.
  5. Eye contact. Do not avoid looking at the interviewer to his/he eyes. You should maintain eye contact. This will allow you to create more empathy and show interest of what he/she is explaining to you. However you have to be careful! If you look start staring at your interviewer the person might feel uncomfortable.

Have you ever thought that certain movements you make might be interpreted the wrong way by the interviewer? For example, looking down can be interpreted as not believing what you are listening, crossing your arms at the height of your chest during the interview transmits and defensive attitude, or rubbing your hands together can show impatience.

However, there are certain gestures that a recruiter might value in a positive way such as slightly tilting your head which for example can transmit interest for what you are hearing or even just walking straight which is a symbol of confidence in yourself.

Remember that your body can back up, emphasize or it can even deny what you are saying. Learn how to use it in your favor so that you can show an open attitude when you are in front of the interviewer!
