September is a good month to start looking for your first job because it marks the beginning of a new school year.  But do you know where to start? The first thing you need to understand is that looking for a job takes time and organization.

Get started now on your search for your dream job by putting into practice the OIE’s advice on how to make your job search a success:

Know yourself. Before you begin your job search, you should first get to know yourself. Think about your skills, strengths, weaknesses, as well as any areas you believe you need to improve. Knowing more about yourself can help more than you think.

Résumé. Even though the perfect résumé doesn’t exist, you do need to devote time to choosing the one that suits you best and, of course, to preparing it. Be sure to include any information that you think will be of interest to the interviewer, such as your work experience, your education, etc.

Build your personal brand. Social networks play a key role in our lives today and LinkedIn is the most important channel for marketing yourself.

Your profile needs to be up-to-date whether you are actively looking for employment or not. Be sure to use a high-quality profile picture, write a description of your professional profile including keywords that will make it easy for recruiters to find you, and personalize your URL.

Another social networking site that can help you in your goal of getting a job is Twitter. To get the most out Twitter, make sure you do the following:

  • Update your profile and include a professional description.
  • Be active. Publish between 5 and 10 tweets a day, and, of course, retweet, respond to and favourite other tweets.
  • Share content that you have created and that is related to your professional interests as well as content published by others.
  • Follow people who interest you professionally.

Dedicate time. Job seeking is a marathon, not a sprint. You must set aside time each day to adapt your CV to the job offers you are applying for, the résumés you submit, etc.

It is also important for you to keep track of your applications and CV submissions. If a recruiter contacts you, you should avoid responses like “I don’t remember submitting my résumé” or “Can you remind me what the job offer was?”.

Prepare for the interview. When you have an interview, prepare for it. Think about the questions that the interviewer could ask you and come up with appropriate answers to those questions. If you are unfamiliar with the company, do some research (What do they do? What are their future plans? What new projects are they working on? etc.). And don’t forget about your appearance! Carefully choose your wardrobe for the day of the interview. A safe bet is to opt for dark trousers along with a white, grey or beige shirt.
