What Skills Should Workers Have in 2020?
You’re still at university and you’re looking for an internship to give you the opportunity to have work experience. But you wonder, ‘What skills will companies look for in their candidates?’ To help you answer that question, we will have a look at the “Future Work Skills 2020” report, published by the Institute for the Future for the University of Phoenix Research Institute, which identifies the new trends that are transforming society.
The report lists the following 10 skills which workers should take into account to become the worker of the future:
- Sense-making: the ability to synthesize key points to help you obtain insights before making a decision.
- Social intelligence: the ability to connect with people to identify and stimulate reactions and desired interactions. Socially intelligent people are able to quickly assess the emotions of those around them and adapt their words, tone and gestures accordingly.
- Adaptive thinking: the ability to think and come up with solutions and innovative and creative answers.
- Cross-cultural competency: the ability to work in different cultural settings. This requires not only language skills, but also adaptability to changing circumstances and an ability to detect and respond to new contexts.
- Computational thinking: the ability to translate vast amounts of data into abstract concepts and to understand data-based reasoning.
- New-media literacy: the ability to develop content using new media forms and to leverage these media for persuasive communication.
- Transdisciplinarity: the ability to understand concepts across multiple disciplines. The ideal worker is “T-shaped” with a deep understanding of one area, but with an ability to converse in a broader range of disciplines.
- Design mindset: the ability to represent and develop tasks and work processes for desired results.
- Cognitive load management: the ability to discriminate and filter important information, and to understand how to maximize cognitive functioning through a variety of tools and techniques.
- Virtual collaboration: the ability to work productively and drive engagement as a member of a virtual team since ICT allows people to work, share ideas and be productive despite physical separation.
