Social and Economic Conditions of Student Life in Europe is a report published by the EUROSTUDENT project which provides comparable data for the 2012-2015 period from 30 countries belonging to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The aim of the study is to compare data on the social dimension of European higher education as well as to collect key indicators on the social dimension of higher education and the state of implementation of the Bologna process.
The report focuses on three areas that reflect the student lifecycle from the transition to higher education to the students’ assessment of their future plans:
Access to higher education and characteristics of student populations
The study shows that in all of the EUROSTUDENT countries for which data are available, at least 70% of students have entered higher education through upper-secondary qualifications or entrance exams. Other access routes to higher education include: adult learning, special entrance exams for certain student groups, special access courses, and accreditation/recognition of prior learning and/or vocational experience.
Types and modes of study
The report also analyses the various higher-education programmes offered in EUROSTUDENT countries based on the enrolment figures for each student group. It also looks at the flexible study structures and part-time study courses that many students opt for.
International student mobility and future plans
The last chapters of the report are devoted to the final phase of the student lifecycle. Their findings highlight students’ high satisfaction levels of the current study programmes in EUROSTUDENT countries and their “good” or “very good” chances of accessing the labour market. Another common pattern found is that students of humanities and arts are rather pessimistic about their chances on the labour market.
