Clothes say a lot about us, whether we like it or not, particularly the colours that we use and how we combine them.
Usually, we choose the clothes that we are going to wear because they suit us and highlight our physique or our skin colour, hair or eyes, while forgetting that the interviewer should not remember us for our inappropriate dress sense but rather for our abilities or skills. To this end, try to avoid prints such as animal prints or excessively loud colours that may distract the interviewer’s attention. It’s better to go for neutral colours.
Set out below are some clues about what an interviewer is likely to perceive according to the colour of the clothes that you decide to wear in the interview:
- Black: Shows that you are a reserved and calm person but, at the same time, elegant. Also a sign of leadership.
- Navy blue: If there is a colour that is a safe bet, without doubt this is it. This colour suggests integrity and professionalism.
- Grey: the person who chooses to wear grey clothes usually has a logical and analytical mind.
- Yellow: represents innovation, energy and intelligence. Remember to use it in moderation; excessive use may tire the interviewer.
- Red: the person who chooses this colour is often passionate, brave and creative.
- Pink: transmits gentleness and is closely associated with femininity.
- Blue: this colour represents calmness, genuineness, sincerity and responsibility.
- Brown: seen as being a boring and traditional colour. Combine it with a touch of colour, by way of contrast.
- Green: a gentle colour that is often associated with creative people.
- Orange: usually seen as the worst colour to wear to a job interview.
- Purple: a relaxing colour which usually suits everybody.
- White: transmits elegance and honesty. People who wear white clothes are usually organised.
In addition, when choosing which clothes to wear for your next interview, bear in mind that “first impressions are lasting impressions” so wear the sort of clothes that are required for the position you are applying for.
