The new academic year is nearly upon us, offering recent graduates the chance to continue to extend their knowledge and specialising as they look for work.

Adecco, a global leader in the management of human resources, and Infoempleo, the leading jobs portal in Spain, have analysed the best postgraduate degrees in terms of obtaining employment in their Informe Infoempleo Adecco  2015: Oferta y Demanda de Empleo en España.

Postgraduate training is an important element and a differentiating factor as regards employability, since, according to selection techniques used, where two candidates are otherwise equal, the one with this higher education will be successful.

The postgraduate degree has two functions as regards joining the job market: first, it boosts the chances of those looking for their first job and secondly, for those candidates who already have experience, it helps their chances of improving their professional category.

In addition, certain professions exist whose very nature means that specific postgraduate training is required.

There is an increasing variety of postgraduate courses available in Spain, both as regards the method and channels used and the content per se. And every year postgraduate studies are viewed more and more positively by the employment market, to the point where 38% of the companies that require university degrees in their job offers value very positively the fact that a candidate has postgraduate studies.

In addition, according to the report another advantage of doing postgraduate studies is that the salary difference between employees with Master’s or other postgraduate training may be up to 54.5% more than those with a more basic level of studies (Obligatory Secondary Education or similar) or 27% more than those with Vocational Training.

Firms providing legal services continue to be those that most value candidates with postgraduate studies, a requirement that appears in 14% of job offers from these employers. After law firms, the Banking and Investment sector is the one which most seeks candidates with postgraduate studies, followed by Human Resources, General Consultancy and the Health sector, in that order.

It is also important to note the type of postgraduates required in each sector; thus, some sectors require candidates to have MBAs, as is the case of Machinery and Mechanical Equipment (74.3% of offers for those with MBAs), Telecommunications (68.2%) or the Industrial sector (57.1%).
